Job Overview

Established in 1983 as the Tourism Council of the South Pacific, the Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) is the mandated organisation representing Tourism in the region. In addition to government members, the Pacific Tourism Organisation has about 145 private sector members..

The role is responsible for undertaking research on tourism and the associated economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts in the Pacific region. The incumbent collects and analyses data, reports on and presents key outcomes and findings to stakeholders and SPTO management. Reporting to the Manager Research and Statistics, the role will be responsible for driving and achieving the following critical outcomes:

Effective sustainability impact monitoring

  • Sustainability monitoring statistical programme effectively-researched and developed through the compilation of economic, social and environment indicators in regional reporting

Support the implementation of tourism research projects and programmes

  • Ensure close collaboration and engagement in all aspects of research and data partnership projects
  • Collate, analyse and publish Market intelligence e.g., the monthly Market Watch
  • Manage and maintain tourism data, publications and user enquiries including access to the online Regional Tourism Resource Centre (RTRC)
  • Carry out effective research to support sustainable tourism activities, project proposals and priority needs

Facilitate priority tourism statistical needs

  • Ensure regular research and data collection including compilation, interpretation and report analysis
  • Maintain close collaboration with National Tourism Offices and National Statistics Offices for data collection, analysis and dissemination
  • Meet stakeholders’ research and statistical demands

Provide technical advisory support and training for SPTO staff, members and National Tourism Offices

  • Support provided to NTOs in the administration / implementation of national data-gathering exercises (e.g. International Visitor Surveys and Sustainability Impact Monitoring)

Ensure effective sustainability impact monitoring through research and compilation of economic, social and environmental indicators in regional reporting/publications

Development and implementation of tools, channels, and activities to ensure a smooth membership sign up and payment process as well as a firm membership engagement

The person we seek will have at least 5 years’ experience in research and statistics, project management or in a similar role with a Degree in Research & Statistics, Information Technology/Computing, Tourism Management or related field. The applicant must possess the following:

  • Proven experience in research and statistics work including analytical research and statistics experience
  • Expert knowledge of publication and statistical software (e.g., excel, info-graphics, dashboards)
  • Strong reporting and documenting skills for analytical and data reports
  • Good understanding of the tourism sector and experience of working in the Pacific region is an advantage
