Graduate Trainee - Flight Simulator Engineer
The Graduate Trainee - Flight Simulator Engineer role provides engineering and technical support to maintain flight simulators and related training devices in compliance with regulatory standards and the Fiji Airways FSTD Management System. Key responsibilities include ensuring daily operational readiness, performing preventive and corrective maintenance, diagnosing faults, and maintaining both hardware and software components of training devices.
The Graduate Trainee - Flight Simulator Engineer is the entry to the flight simulator engineering career structure and the opportunity for a graduate in a parallel engineering discipline to enter the profession after gaining one - two years' work experience in their degree subject. They will undergo a structured programme of training and instruction delivered by CAE and further development through on the job training performing task assignments and work priorities as directed by a shift leader and overseen by the Technical Manager.
Advancement to Flight Simulator Engineer occurs at the 12-18 month point after successful completion of the programme and assessment as competent by a CAE subject matter expert.
The ability and willingness to work flexible shifts and to adapt to changing work schedules is essential.
An aviation background or strong practical interest in Aviation is an advantage.
Key Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Undertake training and qualification on various aircraft types and simulation systems.
- Work under supervision and perform on the job training duties assigned by the Manager Technical FJAA or Lead FSE including:
- Assist in supporting Full Flight Simulators (FFS), Flight Training Devices (FTD) and Cabin Crew Training Device (CEET and Fire trainer)
- Learn and assist in performing preventive maintenance tasks on simulators and associated systems.
- Apply technical and non-technical knowledge to complete routine tasks while following detailed procedures.
- Complete all designated training activities.
- Learn and comply with FJAA Compliance Management System.
- Follow technical guidance from supervisors and senior engineers to carry out assigned tasks.
- Ensure all work is spot-checked, with detailed reviews conducted for advanced assignments.
- Assist in diagnosing and resolving issues with simulators and related systems.
- Assist in troubleshooting by using block, wiring, and schematic diagrams to trace basic circuits.
- Assist in recording and tracking maintenance activities using the maintenance management system.
- Assist in monitoring and update the repair status of inoperative equipment within the logistics management database.
- Assist in documentation of maintenance activities, including work order updates, repair actions, inventory adjustments, and material control duties.
- Conduct voice communications via phone, intercom, and radio circuits.
- Assist in providing networking and information systems support for training devices and networks.
- Learn system requirements, design standards, tools, and procedures.
- Assist in implementing basic modifications to installed simulators.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- A Bachelor's Degree in Aeronautics, or Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Mechatronics or Computer/Network Engineering, and at least 1 year's work experience in the degree field, or a Technical Diploma/Level 4 Certificate plus a further 2 years in an electronic or electrical, aircraft maintenance engineering (avionic), or Aviation related field, and at least 1 year's work experience in the certificated field.
- Advantageous - Working knowledge of motion, control loading and simulator visual systems.
- Advantageous - Knowledge of aircraft operation and systems.
- Demonstrable experience in at least some of the following disciplines:
- Applied knowledge of analog and digital theory.
- Interpretation of system prints and schematics.
- Proficiency in operating test equipment.
- Diagnosis of failed electrical and electronic equipment.
- Computer systems architecture.
- Proficient in soldering and circuit board repairs.
- Repair of computer systems, networks, electrical systems, electronics and electro-mechanical systems.
- Interpretation of Electrical/Electronics/Mechanical schematics and diagrams.
- Good level of understanding of computer hardware and software.
- Good level of software skills to support tasking.
