RESORT ACCOUNTANT

Malolo Island Resort, Fiji, is an award-winning 4-star resort located in the Mamanuca Islands. The resort comprises 46 bures, three dining outlets, three bars, a boutique, kids club, spa, activities centre and two swimming pools.

We are seeking a highly motivated, meticulous and experienced Resort Accountant to join our island-based finance team. The position is responsible for maintaining sound financial systems, safeguarding company assets and ensuring transactions are processed accurately and efficiently.

BROAD ROLE SCOPE: This is a broad, hands-on, cross-functional finance position. Its primary focus is the Resort Accountant responsibilities outlined below. The appointee will also act as the relieving Income Auditor when required and, as a tertiary responsibility, provide relieving Cost Controller coverage. The role therefore requires a versatile finance professional able to work across accounting operations, revenue assurance, inventory and cost control.

 

Reporting: Functionally to the Chief Financial Officer and day to day to Finance Manager, while working closely with the Resort Manager and departmental management team on operational matters.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:

RESORT ACCOUNTING

  • Oversee day-to-day resort finance operations and supervise the island-based finance team, ensuring appropriate task allocation and coverage.
  • Attend management and departmental briefings and communicate relevant operational and financial matters to the finance team.
  • Review night-audit reports, revenue summaries, banking, cash collections, credit-card settlements and daily sales reconciliations.
  • Prepare and distribute daily revenue flash reports, including explanations for write-offs, adjustments and material variances.
  • Manage petty-cash floats and disbursements and conduct regular checks of cashier floats and other resort cash holdings.
  • Ensure transactions are properly authorised, supported, coded and processed in accordance with company policies and internal controls.
  • Review guest and city-ledger balances, follow up unresolved items and liaise with Head Office receivables and payables teams.

MONTH-END, REPORTING AND COMPLIANCE

  • Coordinate month-end closing and prepare or review journals, accruals, reconciliations and supporting schedules.
  • Organise resort-wide stocktakes, distribute count assignments and ensure results are independently verified and properly documented.
  • Complete boat-pass reconciliations, final Opera audits, city-ledger verifications, outlet float counts and authorised expense write-offs.
  • Assist with management accounts, budgets and forecasts and explain material revenue, expense and inventory variances.
  • Maintain complete financial records and support internal, external and year-end audits, ensuring agreed actions are addressed promptly.
  • Identify control weaknesses or irregularities, recommend corrective action and support improvements to finance systems and procedures.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITY - RELIEVING INCOME AUDITOR

  • Provide Income Auditor coverage during leave, absence or other operational requirements.
  • Verify daily resort revenue from Opera and MICROS against night audit reports, banking, card settlements and supporting records.
  • Review rebates, discounts, voids, complimentary transactions and other revenue adjustments, promptly escalating exceptions.

 

TERTIARY RESPONSIBILITY - RELIEVING COST CONTROLLER

  • Provide Cost Controller coverage during leave, absence or peak operational periods.
  • Assist with stocktakes, inventory reconciliations and investigation of material variances.
  • Review receiving, purchasing, storeroom and inventory-movement documentation for completeness and accuracy.
  • Support food and beverage cost analysis and the timely reporting of cost-control issues.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Qualifications: Diploma or degree in Accounting, Finance, Hotel Management or a related discipline.

Experience: At least three years' supervisory experience in hotel or resort finance operations.

Technical knowledge: Sound understanding of accounting, reconciliations, month-end reporting, revenue auditing, cash and inventory controls.

Operational knowledge: Experience in food and beverage operations, procurement, stock control, receiving and stores systems.

Systems: Advanced Microsoft Excel and Word skills, with working knowledge of Opera PMS and MICROS POS. SunSystems experience would be an advantage.

Personal attributes: Strong analytical ability, sound judgement, integrity, attention to detail and a consistent ability to meet deadlines.

Flexibility: Prepared to work flexible hours, assist with periodic inventory movements and reside in an island-resort environment.
