Aspen Medical is seeking qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Operating Theatre Assistant. The Operating Theatre Assistant provides a support function in the operating theater by facilitating the movement, safe positioning and comfort of patients throughout their surgical experience. In addition to supporting patient care, the Operating Theatre Assistant is responsible for providing support to the surgical team before, during, and after surgical procedures. This role involves preparing the operating room, assisting with patient care, and ensuring that all surgical instruments and equipment are properly sterilized and available. This position is based at Ba and Lautoka Hospital.

The roles and responsibilities of this position include:

  • Prepare the operating room by ensuring that all necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies are available and sterile.
  • Assist in positioning patients on the operating table and covering them with sterile surgical drapes.
  • Verify the functionality of surgical equipment and report any issues to the supervisor.
  • Assist the surgical team by passing instruments, maintaining a sterile field, and handling specimens as needed.
  • Observe and report any changes in the patient’s condition to the surgical team.
  • Count and track surgical instruments and supplies before, during, and after procedures to ensure nothing is left inside the patient.
  • Clean and restock the operating room after procedures, ensuring it is ready for the next surgery.
  • Sterilize and properly store surgical instruments and equipment according to hospital protocols.
  • Assist in transferring patients from the operating room to the recovery room.
  • Maintain an inventory of surgical supplies and report shortages to the supervisor.
  • Follow all hospital policies and procedures, including infection control and safety protocols.
  • Accurately complete all required documentation and logs related to surgical procedures and equipment.
  • Work collaboratively with surgeons, nurses, anesthetists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure smooth operation of the surgical theatre.
  • Participate in the development of a safe and healthy workplace and comply with instructions given in adhering to safe work procedures.
  • Take reasonable care to ensure own safety and health and that of others and to abide by our duty of care provided for in the OHS policy.
  • Any other reasonable duties delegated by management.

Experience and Qualifications Required

  • University diploma or equivalent; certification or diploma in operating theatre technology or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience as an operating theatre assistant or in a similar role preferred.
  • Knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, and equipment.
  • Understanding of sterile techniques and infection control practices.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to stand for long periods.
  • Ability to listen carefully to instructions, seek clarification and carry out tasks as requested
  • Compassionate manner with all patients to provide exceptional care
  • Attention to detail in performing tasks – eg. cleaning and stock control
  • Excellent time management skills
